CV check

Check your CV: specific notes instead of a score

ModernVitae goes through your CV against fixed rules and tells you what is missing or stands out, and where. There is no score, and what you change is up to you.

The check is free and runs in your browser: bring in your CV from a PDF or from pasted text and see the notes in the editor under “Check”. PDF and print are part of Premium.

What the check is, and what it is not

The check is a list of fixed rules that anyone can read. It finds what can be established reliably about a CV: a detail is missing, a bullet point is very long, an entry has no end date, an entry appears twice.

It is not a rating. Many services hand out a number such as “ATS score 87”; what such a number measures is left open, and no applicant tracking system publishes how it reads CVs. That is why ModernVitae gives no number and does not promise that a CV will “pass” any system. Whether the content of your CV is convincing is something no rule can judge.

What a note looks like

  1. From the note to the place

Every note names the section it belongs to and takes you to where you can fix it. Once it is fixed, the note disappears by itself.

What is checked

  • Personal details

Is the name, the email address or the phone number missing? Does the email address look valid? Is there a link to a professional profile?

  • Entries

Empty entries, entries without a title and entries that appear twice.

  • Bullet points and profile

Bullet points longer than 180 characters, entries with more than seven bullet points, a missing or very long profile summary.

  • Dates

Entries without dates, entries with a start but no end, and entries that begin in the future.

  • Page count

More than two pages? If you wish, the editor tries tighter spacing and a smaller font and shows whether the CV then fits on one page.

  • Black and white, and the job advert

The document as a black-and-white printer would produce it. And a comparison with the text of a job advert: which of its terms appear in your CV and which do not.

How to check your CV

  1. Bring in your CV from a PDF or from pasted text; you see and correct what was recognised before the CV is created.
  2. Open “Check” in the editor: the notes are grouped by content, dates and pages.
  3. Look at the notes and fix them, or leave them if they do not apply to you.

Frequently asked questions

Do I get a score or an ATS score?

No. A single number would suggest a precision that does not exist. You get specific notes, each with the place it refers to.

Is my CV uploaded?

No. Reading the PDF and running the check both happen in your browser. Without an account, the CV stays there; only with an account is it saved on the server.

Does it work with every PDF?

No. Extraction works best with single-column PDFs that contain real text and can contain errors; a scanned image cannot be read. You see and correct the result before it becomes a CV.

Is the check free?

Yes, with no account and no Premium needed.
