Cover letter

Write a cover letter online: a document of its own for every application

In ModernVitae, a cover letter is a document in its own right. You write it next to its page, choose one of ten templates and use it with any application, alongside any CV.

Writing one cover letter, designing it and viewing the preview are free. Further cover letters and the finished PDF are part of Premium.

A letter that stands on its own

A cover letter is a business letter: sender, recipient, date, subject, salutation, text and closing, each in its usual place. ModernVitae provides that form. You can take your name and address from a CV if you wish; after that, the letter no longer belongs to any CV and does not change when you change something there.

You write the text yourself and see beside it how the letter will look in print. For another job, you make a copy: recipient, subject and date follow the new application, and the text remains your starting point. Paragraphs you need more than once can be saved as your own snippets.

The letter in the package

  1. Cover letter, CV and attachments as one document

An application names its CV and its cover letter. In its package, the cover letter comes before the CV, and the preview shows all the pages one below the other, just as they will be output.

What comes with the cover letter

  • The structure of a business letter

Sender, recipient, date, subject, salutation and closing sit where a business letter expects them.

  • Ten letter templates

From classic to modern, each in your colour and font. For every CV, ModernVitae suggests the one that matches.

  • Write next to the page

What you type appears on the letter straight away and is saved automatically. An outline in five blocks helps with the structure.

  • A check before you send

Fixed rules point out what is missing or has been left in: recipient, subject, a placeholder. No score.

  • Your own snippets

Save paragraphs you have written yourself and use them again in another cover letter.

  • The right one for every application

With Premium you create as many cover letters as you like and link every application to its CV and its cover letter.

How your cover letter comes together

  1. Create a cover letter, with the sender details and matching design of a CV if you wish.
  2. Enter recipient and subject and write the letter; the page beside it shows it as it will be printed.
  3. Check it, export it as a PDF, or combine it with your CV and attachments in the package of an application.

Frequently asked questions

Does ModernVitae write the cover letter for me?

No. You write the text yourself. ModernVitae provides the structure of a business letter, shows an outline and checks against fixed rules whether anything is missing.

Is the cover letter free?

Writing one cover letter, designing it and viewing the preview are free, even without signing up. Downloading as a PDF and printing are part of ModernVitae Premium.

Can I create several cover letters?

With ModernVitae Premium, as many as you like: a new one for every application, or a copy of an existing one. One is included for free, and you can go on editing it at any time.

Does the cover letter belong to a CV?

No. Cover letter and CV are separate documents. An application names both; the same cover letter can be used alongside different CVs, and the other way round.

Can I export the cover letter on its own?

Yes. Every cover letter can be exported as a PDF by itself. In the package of an application, it sits in one document together with the CV and attachments.
